Speaking of pets, the Barkin' Dog Duathlon will be held May 8th. In its 12 year it claims to be the most popular duathlon in the western US. For serious duathletes, this event is the first of the Mile-High Duathlon Series featuring three area run-bike-run events.

Northeastern Colorado has an abundance of wildlife and is home to the largest migrating elk herds in the country. On June 12th Fort Morgan sponsors the 2010 Windmill Century Classic, a multiple event bicycle ride through the area's beautiful outback. Fort Collins, in the front range in north-central Colorado, is an urban and educational center for the region. Home of Colorado State University, there is a diversity of happenings to enjoy. Cinco de Mayo is on the list, with a community celebration in Old Town and the Cinco-Cinco 5K Walk/Run and Kids Fun Run. Serious runners can participate in the Colorado Marathon on May 9, 2010. This is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon and is know and America's most scenic course. One of the area's favorite events in the Cripple Creek Donkey Derby Days. 2010 is the 79th year for this event which is held late June. The featured draw is the 12 miles donkey race, however the is much more to keep your attention. Street vendors, family activities and live entertainment make for a complete weekend, and it is a free event to boot.
Southwestern Colorado and the four corners area is a outdoor enthusiasts wonderland. The amazing geography and strong outdoor spirit combine for some thrilling activities. Bicyclists can race the train at the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic over Memorial Day weekend. The challenge is to race the train to Silverton, 50 miles away crossing passes over 10,000 in elevation. There are three days of events and activities including a kids race, bike swap, live entertainment and a really cool jersey for those who register online.
If food is your favorite sport, consider the Men Who Grill event June 12th. This is a benefit for Durango's Women's Resource Center and features a grilling competition between more than 20 teams. A truly fun event, benefiting a great organization – come out and have a good time.
Nature lovers will love the Ute Mountain / Mesa Verdi Birding Festival originating in Cortez. Held May 12 - 16th 2010 this is terrific event. The schedule features storytelling, lectures, and guides. The adventurous can take a half day raft trip, there is even a wine tasting and a birdwatching competition. While you are in the area, take advantage and drive the Trail of the Ancients, a magical route through ancient Native American lands filled with intrigue and spectacular geography.
