Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site
Principal fur trading post, Indian rendezvous and way station on the Santa Fe Trail 1833-1849. For much of its 16-year history, the fort was the only major permanent white settlement on the Trail between Missouri and the Mexican settlements. Highway 194, 13 miles west of Las Animas. Boggsville National Historic Site
First non-fortified permanent settlement in southeastern Colorado around 1862. Settled by Thomas Boggs, John Prowers, Kit Carson and other early settlers. A major site on the Santa Fe Trail, Highway 101, 3.5 miles south of Las Animas.
